Blue foods are not all that common and for that reason alone, my kids love this. They feel like I’ve concocted a potion for them and who am I to say different? Apart from it’s beautiful color this is heavy on nutrients and packs a power punch in the antioxidant department. This right here is a sweet treat in a glass. What more can you ask for in a smoothie really?
Blueberry Bliss Smoothie
There’s something about this smoothie and it’s not just the color! It’s so sweet you’d be forgiven for questioning what’s in it and so yummy you’ll mistake this for pudding. Yep, this is one smoothie we absolutely LOVE.
Smoothies take minutes to make and they’re a life saver on those morning where you’re keen for the kids to not get on the school bus hungry but everyones left it late and before you know it the times flown by and you’ve got two minute left for breakfast! Well, you’re. in luck. Try this smoothie, you’ll be pleased you did :)
If the smoothie is too thick for very little kids, add an extra cup milk to thin the smoothie. I know lots of little ones have problems sucking a smoothie through a straw as they’re too thick to get much up the straw, so thinning it out makes their work easier. You could also leave out the oatmeal which will also thin the smoothie out further.
What’s In A Blueberry Bliss Smoothie?
Blueberries are the main event in this smoothie recipe, you won’t be surprised to know. There form the base of this smoothie and the other fruits are there to add interest and sweetness.
I add oatmeal to this smoothie for some protein. This helps to keep you going until morning tea and stops those rumbling tummies.
Blueberries
Two full cups of blueberries go into this smoothie and gives you the beautiful color. With the USA being the biggest producer of Blueberries, you should have no problems finding these.
Strawberries
The sweetness of strawberries goes so well with blueberries. Most kids love strawberries and happily eat them.
Pineapple
The pineapple adds the tropical element to this smoothie. I’ve used frozen pineapple here but you could use fresh, canned (in natural juice, not syrup) or frozen.
Oatmeal
I quite like to add oatmeal to breakfast smoothies as it gives the kids not only the goodness of the fruits but also some extra protein to help keep them going. This is optional and the smoothie doesn’t need it, so leave this out if you’re having this smoothie as a refreshing drink rather than breakfast.
Blueberries Are The Best
In case you didn’t know, Blueberries are awesome. Really, they’re amazing little things. You’ve heard the saying eat the rainbow? Well, it’s quite hard to find blue food so we’ve got to make the most of these powerful little berries.
Why are blueberries so good? Here’s some of the good things you’re gonna get:
- Calcium
- Iron
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Phosphorus
- Zinc
- Folate
There are also some other great health benefits:
- Blueberries contain one of the highest antioxidant levels amongst fruit
- May help prevent heart disease
- May help regulate blood sugar
- May help maintain eye health
- May alleviate stomach problems
Fresh Or Frozen?
If you read my blog often you’ll know I’m a very big fan of frozen fruit. I keep bags and bags of the stuff in the freezer and yet we still seem to run out of it alarmingly frequently.
Why do I like frozen fruit? Well for a start it’s much cheaper than buying fruit fresh. Depending on where you live you’ll have a selection of fruits available to you that are reasonably price and plentiful. But these are dependant on where you live of course.
Like me I’m sure your local supermarket stocks many fruits year round that have been imported and are out of season locally or simply don’t grow in your country. And even if you bypass the air miles, they’re a lot more expensive. Enter frozen fruits….
Frozen fruits offer you a global selection of fruits from all corners of the globe and are available all year round and are usually very reasonably priced. And best of all frozen fruit contains all the same nutrients you’d get from fresh.
In short, I like to buy local fresh fruit if it’s in season, otherwise it’s frozen all the way for me, especially for smoothies where you can utilise the frozen-ness of the fruit as it cools the smoothies down too! Yay :)
