Love cherries? This is the recipe for you. Everyone needs a cherry sauce for ice cream, right? Oh yes! I know you know what I mean. Really this is pretty awesome spooned out of the jar and straight into your mouth but in the interests of keeping things civilised, I guess it’d better go on some ice cream. Ahemmm…
Cherry Sauce For Ice Cream
Have you ever had a look at the range of sauces for ice cream available in the supermarkets? You’ve got kids, I’m guessing that’s a yes. Appealing, aren’t they. Every flavor you can think of (and some you probably hadn’t). The problem is most of them have never so much as looked at the original food of the flavor they’re supposed to be and are instead full of all the things we’d rather they weren’t.
But knowing this doesn’t usually take away their kid appeal. At least not for mine, it doesn’t, and it’s not as if we stopped eating once cream when we started eating Clean. No…we simply adjusted the ice cream we ate, and you can find the recipes for those below.
So what does all this mean? It means we make our own sauces and this cherry sauce for ice cream is one I make a lot. I mean, really a lot.
Being the cherry lovers we are I keep a stash of frozen cherries in the freezer for those times when we want something sweet. I buy dark sweet cherries when I get them frozen (most of the time) and they’re so sweet, you’d never guess they’re just cherries. And so I make the most of this and turn them into all sorts of sweet goodies since they make an amazing substitute for the sweeter processed foods we used to eat.
While you don’t have to, there’s no hard and fast rules here, I blend this sauce before I give it to the kids. Feel free to keep the cherries whole, I just felt, especially when the kids were smaller, that if I could disguise something ‘good’ then they’d not feel over loaded with fruits and veggies.
You could pour this sauce over a fruit salad and they’d never know they were eating an extra portion of fruit. Sometimes you’ve gotta be sneaky!
What’s Cherry Sauce made from?
Cherries are the main ingredient in this recipe by a long shot. There’s not a lot else in it apart from a little coconut sugar or maple syrup to add more sweetness and arrow root, which I use to thicken the sauce slightly.
You can leave out the maple syrup if you like or if your kids are very used to Clean eating recipes and not too used to store bought sweetened foods. When I fist made this cherry sauce we were transitioning from processed to homemade and so the kids were used to very artificially sweetened foods.
You can always add the coconut sugar or maple syrup in at the end, so test it and see if it needs it. If you do this, add the coconut sugar in when the sauce is still hot so it can dissolve.

Fresh Or Frozen Cherries?
Either or. I fond that frozen cherries can be a bit sweeter than fresh cherries so go with whatever you have. Frozen cherries are also cheaper where I live so that’s what I usually go for if cherries are out of season.
The type of cherries you use only matters in so far as some are sweeter than others. Oh, and of course the pitting. Pitting cherries is not my favorite thing to do and so this may be another reason I favor frozen…. :)
Storing Cherry Sauce
Once you’ve made your cherry sauce, pour it into a clean jam jar (one that’s got a lid) and allow it to cool fully. You can then store it in the fridge for 4-5 days, making sure to keep it covered.
I haven’t tried to freeze this sauce and I think the water content would be too much for it. If you make this and try freezing it do let me know how it goes!
