Chia In Smoothies
I like to add chia seeds to smoothies. I used to not really get these tiny little seeds, I thought they were a ‘fad’, something trendy people were eating this week and I’m not into that at all, so I ignored them.
And then I found out more about them and realised they weren’t some trend but an ancient seed we’ve been eating forever and so I tried them. The first few times, not so successfully.
And then alongside putting them in chia seed puddings, I started putting them in smoothies.
They’re so tiny they go almost unnoticed. A high-speed blender will make the seeds almost disappear, but even with a less powerful blender you’ll still be able to get the creamy texture the kids go crazy for.

Ingredients
There’s not many ingredients and you’re likely to have them at home right now. Ok, you may have to go and buy some Chia seeds! They’re Real foods, minimally processed and, well, delicious.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds come from the Salvia Hispanica plant and are a member of the Mint family. Who knew :)
These little seeds absorb liquid and swell, so they’re great for making healthier jams, thickening sauces and making chia seed puddings among other things. They don’t really have a flavor of their own and take on the flavor of whatever they’re being added to which makes them awesome for smoothies, you get all the nutritional benefits of chia seeds and they’re flavored however you like!
Here’s a few of the health reasons (vitamins and minerals) to add them to this Choc Chia Smoothie:
- Protein
- Fibre
- Calcium
- Iron
- Zinc
Ripe Bananas
The riper your bananas the sweeter the smoothie will be. You know those bananas that have been on your kitchen worktop for ages? The brown spotted ones that are slightly squishy? They’re perfect for this recipe.
Cocoa
I like to use a high quality Organic cocoa powder in my cooking/baking/smoothie making.
I love that you can get a rich chocolate flavor, one that’s every bit as satisfying as grabbing a chocolate bar from the stores just using cocoa. I look for ones that have no added sugar.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a higher protein grain than many other grains and so it’s great for adding to smoothies. It keeps you going for longer and when blended into smoothies gives a creamy flavor. Yummy.
Smoothie Basics
These are the frozen fruits I like to keep in my freezer:
Ripe Bananas – Bananas never go to waste in our house. Ripe bananas get peeled, sliced and popped into freezer bags. When I need bananas for a smoothie, I simply grab a handful straight from the freezer.
Berries – I save a lot of money by purchasing frozen berries rather than fresh. I also think that frozen berries often taste better. They are generally picked at their prime before freezing, so the natural process of ripening makes them a little sweeter.
Lemons – squeeze lemon juice into ice cube mold and once frozen, pop the frozen lemon cubes into freezer bag. This little trick works well for most fruit purees and juices too.
