Clean Eating Chocolate
My Daughter decided to give up Dairy. Which is a little inconvenient in a family that has always eaten dairy. And giving up dairy meant giving up one of her favorite foods, chocolate.
Trying to be a supportive kinda Mom, I wanted to help her find an alternative and after a lot of trial and error we came up with a recipe that can replace chocolate. It’s true. You won’t believe me until you try it, but it’s for real!
While I don’t make this all that often, I do keep some in the freezer most of the time for those moment when that chocolate craving hits, and I promise you, it totally hits the spot. While just because it’s clean doesn’t mean we eat this in vast quantities, I do believe a little of what you fancy does you good. And this really is very good :)
The main problem with the chocolate we used to eat before we started eating Clean, is that it often contains some less than Clean ingredients in the form of flavorings. On top of that, it obviously uses sugar, in some pretty large quantities, depending on your chocolate bar of choice!
You can find some really high quality chocolate bars. Generally, the higher the cocoa, or cacao percentage, the less sugar’s added to it. But the problem is that for my kids at least, being given a bar of 90% dark chocolate would be more of a chore than a treat. It tastes bitter to them, and they want the chocolate they’re used to, which is basically milk chocolate.
This recipe replaces the chocolate they know and love. None of them have to be coaxed into eating this, the coconut oil gives it a ‘melting’ texture even straight from the freezer. You’ll find the chocolate does this thanks to the coconut oil. The purer the coconut oil you use, the lower the melting point, so while this chocolate is hard, it very quickly become ‘biteable’.
Is This Chocolate Healthy?
This Clean eating chocolate is made from Real food ingredients, all of which have their own health benefits. That said, like all treats, whether you’re eating a Clean diet or not, should be eaten in moderation. So it’s a hard question to answer without the answer being a little misleading: For a treat, it’s good and a healthier option. Making up the bulk of your diet? Not so much :)
Having some treats available to you and your family is what makes Clean eating liveable. If I was too strict about what I gave the kids, it wouldn’t work, we’d all be miserable and this is about improving the way we live, not inflicting misery on anyone!

Dairy Free
While the dairy free phase didn’t last, this Clean eating chocolate recipe did. I’m sure there’s whole load of diary chocolate recipes that also make awesome chocolate, we really love the taste of this. It’s creamy, chocolatey, melts in your mouth and you don’t need too much to feel like you’ve had your chocolate hit.
If you’re looking for a dairy free chocolate, do try this. It’s a really easy recipe and the kids love to help out with it. I’ve used a regular ice cube tray for this, but you can get some really cute ones for littler kids.
This set of animal ice cube trays are adorable, and would make sweet little chocolate animals, or use these skull trays for a party, or perhaps Halloween.

There’s a few tips for making these you might want to have a read through, although this is pretty easy:
Making Clean Eating Chocolate
- The Chocolate tastes like dark chocolate, so if you want a more ‘Milk chocolate’ taste then replace honey with maple syrup and add an extra tablespoon of maple and then reduce the cocoa by 1 tablespoon
- If you refrigerate instead of freeze, you will get a mousse consistency. So the recipe works really, really well as a dairy free chocolate mousse too. Just double the recipe to make 4 serves of chocolate mousse
- Don’t forget to rub a little coconut butter in your ice tray so that the chocolate slides out easily (you can see I missed this step and had to hack my chocolate squares out the tray)
