What do you eat when you stop buying your child’s favorite breakfast cereals?
This is one of the first little challenges you have to conquer when you start eating Real food. It’s more of a problem when you have kids who are used to eating a bowl of the sugary stuff every morning before school. My children went from having a choice of two or three of their favorite cereals in the pantry to nothing. Overnight.
There is something very convenient about grabbing a bowl of Cereal on a busy weekday morning. Its also the reason that Supermarkets dedicate an entire aisle to it. Busy families LOVE to buy cereal – Moms love it because it’s fast. Kids love it because, well, it’s stuffed to the brim with sugar. And Mom’s OK with a second bowl!
There is no easy way around this. Making the change to Real food means going cold turkey on most kids breakfast cereals. To make this work, you need to have something in your kitchen to replace it. Something that’s healthy, convenient and that the kids will actually eat.
This was one of the mistakes I made early on in the process. I thought I could just fill my kitchen pantry with real food and the kids would happily make the switch.
That didn’t happen.
Yes. Perhaps I could have waited them out. They would have eaten it eventually. Surely? If I just waited for them to get hungry enough. Maybe? I’m not sure.
In case that didn’t work (And because I think my kids may have out waited me), I had to come up with some Real food recipes that would work for our family. This Homemade Granola is one of our favorites.
This is a recipe that my kids love. It’s a healthy alternative that you can make in bulk and the family can help themselves to it before school. I make it up every Sunday afternoon or evening and pop it in a air tight bag which I store in the fridge. It takes about 3 min to prep and 30 minutes in the oven to cook up a weeks worth of granola.
