French toast has been a staple in this house since…I don’t know when. Eggy bread as it’s more fondly known, has always been one of the kids favorite breakfasts and just coz we’re eating Clean, I see no good reason to change that now!
This Rye bread french toast is just a better version of the breakfast the kids know and love. All that’s changed is the bread (white bread to Rye) and instead of spoonfuls of store bought jam, they now have Maple syrup. Which honestly, is no great hardship :)
Rye Bread French Toast
I’d imagined that switching to Rye toast from white bread might cause a little breakfast time friction, and there was to begin with. However, I think this was due mostly to the fact that the Rye is a bit denser than the fluffy white bread I used to use for this recipe.
The good thing about Rye bread french toast though is that simply by cooking it the way we do, the final food on the plate look isn’t all that different, even though Rye is obviously darker in color than white bread. And once then kids had eaten this once (we have a one bite rule, didn’t need it for this, it’s sweet enough to ensure they ate the lot!) that was it, they didn’t so much as give a passing glance backwards at their old beloved white bread :)
If you’re looking for something a little different for breakfast, something warm and sweet, please try this! It’s really easy and is one of the most asked for breakfasts in our house. And I have two fussy eaters who love this. TWO!

For this french toast recipe, the bread is cooked in a frying pan rather than toasted. It crisps up like a dream and the frying pan gives you those yummy crunchy edges, and Rye bread does the job perfectly.
The eggs and cinnamon mixture soaks into the bread and since we switched to this bread, I find that because the Rye is a heavier bread, the mixture holds in the bread better than it did with white bread. The crunch is better, and it feels like an altogether more filling breakfast.
This is one of the Rye breads I’ve used if I’ve not been able to find it in my local shop. Lots of stores are stocking Rye bread now, so you should be able to find it easily.
