Healthy Chocolate Ice Cream?
Does such a thing exist? And more importantly, do the kids really like it? So many questions but in short yes ? it exists.
And my kids? They’d eat it by the bucket load if they could, as would I….
I guess it shouldn’t be called Ice Cream. There’s no cream involved. In fact there’s just two ingredients, so not even 100% sure that’s even a recipe. But I love an easy dessert, and this chocolate one ticks all the boxes you might want in a dessert: clean eating, healthy and sweet.
I always have a stash of frozen bananas in the freezer. They’re so handy to have and can be used in a whole load of desserts. They take a few minutes to turn into something scrummy. You need a blender like this one, Nutri-bullet or something similar to make the magic happen, but when it does, oh boy…it’s good.
Low Fat Chocolate Ice Cream
The cream in regular Ice Cream recipes, store bought or homemade is pretty fattening. Cream is fine in moderation, but ice cream uses a lot. A lot. And then there’s all the flavourings, sweeteners and preservatives in them. Yuk.
This chocolate dessert recipe is low fat, clean, and…delicious.
Frozen bananas are the star of the show here. Very ripe bananas are sweet. Super sweet. And they can be used in so many things to replace sugar. And the best part, you can flavour frozen banana with pretty much anything (like peanut butter).
How to freeze bananas
Always make sure your bananas are really ripe before you freeze them. And peel them. Yep, I didn’t do this the first time I tried this recipe many moon ago. Turns out you can’t peel a frozen banana. The skin sticks to the banana like you wouldn’t believe and it’s a total no go.
- Peel you bananas
- chop them into large slices (1 medium sized banana should be into 4 pieces)
- Use a ziploc bag like these ones and put them in the freezer
I tend to use the bananas pretty frequently, but you could leave them in the freezer for up to a month.

Do frozen bananas taste like ice cream?
I find the texture of the blended frozen banana in this recipe indistinguishable from ice-cream. Really. It’s smooth, creamy and sweet. You end up with a soft scoop ice cream (which is awesome for teenies) and can put the dessert back in the freezer if you prefer it a little harder, although you may want to leave it out for 20 minutes before you eat it after it’s been frozen after blending.
How to make healthy chocolate ice cream
This recipe gives you a soft serve ice cream. If you’re eating it immediately then you’re good to go as soon as it’s made. You can also store this in the freezer after you’ve made it, and it will harden up.
Ingredients
- 4 Frozen bananas
- 1 ½ tbsp Organic cocoa powder this is the one I use
Process
- Have a tub ready like one of these to put your ice cream into, as depending on the size of your blender, you may need to do this in batches – if it takes you 3 batches to get through the frozen banana, split the cocoa into 3 lots
- Put your banana chunks into the blender. It can take a number of ‘blends’ to get to the ‘ice cream’ stage. Blend for 30 seconds or so and then scrape down the sides of the blender. Repeat this process until you have a consistency you’re happy with. Add your cocoa (remembering to add the cocoa divided by batches!)
- Wizz in the blender again to fully mix the cocoa in and add to your storage tub
- Repeat until all your bananas are done
- Put your ice cream in the freezer for an hour or two to harden it up if you’re not eating it straight away
For extra texture and a little crunch, try sprinkling some broken up Date and Banana Flapjack on top
