This healthy, kid friendly Clean eating homemade peanut butter granola is a total winner. If you’re looking for a peanut granola to replace your store bought one, this is it. And it’s a surprisingly simple recipe. You’ll want a jar or two of this in your pantry at all time.
Homemade Peanut Butter Granola
One of the things I really struggled with when introducing my family to a Real Food lifestyle was what to feed them for Breakfast. We had been eating processed boxed cereals for a long time and if I’m being honest, it was so convenient.
Too Convenient.
Boxed cereal is quick, cheap and let’s face it, the kids flippin’ love it. It’s so full of sugar it’s like sweeties in a box – for breakfast. Of course they love it!
Trying to cook a from scratch breakfast for the family was taking its toll. I was rushed, stressed and overwhelmed every morning. I had to find an easier way to get healthy breakfasts sorted during the week or I knew I would give up.
As Mom’s, sometimes we need to think a little smarter when it comes to weekday breakfast times. It’s a busy time of day so any time saving trick is always welcome.
Keeping the pantry stocked with a couple fast breakfast options can make the morning flow a little smoother. A jar or two of this no added sugar Homemade Granola will go a long way to getting the kids out the door with a good, healthy breakfast in their tummies.
Prep time? 10 mins. Total time cooking? 45 minutes. Perfect :)

Is Granola Clean Eating?
There are so many opinions on what’s Clean and what’s not, it’s easy to get lost in the many conversations about whether a food is Clean. And for a while, I spent more time thinking about what we could eat than actually cooking.
So these days I have a simple rule. Is it made with Real food (by which I mean non factory processed)? If there are sugars, are they unrefined? And lastly, Is it better than the store bought equivalent? If the answer to all these is yes, I go for it. Honestly, it’s that simple.
This homemade peanut butter granola is surprisingly easy to make. Once you get the hang of it, you will be a raving fan. Most recipes consist of only two little baby baking steps:
- Mix everything in a bowl
- Bake for around 30 min.
It’s actually so super easy that it’s one of the things I do weekly to make sure we have a couple of jars in the pantry all the time. It’s like making your very own breakfast cereal – except it’s healthy!
Ingredients
The ingredients are not fancy, complicated or (often!) unavailable. They’re pantry staples.
Peanut Butter
Once you find a natural peanut butter that’s made with nothing but peanuts and perhaps a pinch of salt, it seems incredible that the majority of store bought jars contain so many other ingredients.
Peanut butter should contain only peanuts. If your local store doesn’t stock one that’s 100% only peanuts, try this one from Maranatha.
Nuts & Seeds
I’ve used peanuts (or monkey nuts), sliced almonds and sunflower seeds for this recipe. They’re nuts I keep in the pantry and are easily available here.
I recommend you use the peanuts as this is peanut butter granola, but feel free to sub out the other two for other nuts. Chop them into small pieces and keep the quantities the same.
Rolled Oats
Classic steel cut oats, not quick cook oats are what you need for this recipe. Just 100% oats and preferably Organic.
Honey
I use honey as a sweetener in lots of my recipes in place of the refined sugars store-bought granola usually contains by the truck load. Slow cooking this cereal gives a caramelised flavor and crunch that every self respecting granola needs!
How To Eat Peanut Butter Granola
We eat this peanut butter granola with a splash of milk or some natural yogurt. This granola isn’t confined to just breakfast time though.
For a healthy filling snack, this granola is pretty good.
Add some fresh fruit to the top, or throw some mini chocolate chips on top for a kids treat. I also like to sprinkle some cinnamon on this: We’re cinnamon lovers here and peanuts and cinnamon just…work!
Storing Homemade Granola
Once you’ve made your batch of granola, all you need is an airtight container. I keep this granola for 10 days or so, but the kids do eat this quite often (by the handful) and so I make it a lot. The honey coating keeps everything preserved and crunchy!
Peanut Butter Granola Variations
This is a versatile recipe and there are lots of variation you can make. These are some of the ones I’ve tried:
- Using Maple syrup in place of honey
- Cashew butter or Almond butter both work well ads a replacement for peanut butter. We happen to love Peanut butter so we stick with this usually. Plus, Cashew nut butter especially, can be pricey. You can also get sunflower seed butter, but I’ve not tried this yet. Beware though, using other butters changes the taste and flavor as you might imagine!
- Adding chocolate chips makes this super indulgent for a treat and adds a bit more sweetness
- Switch up the nuts and seeds you use: Try using chopped walnuts, chia seeds, brazil nuts, pecans or a good old bag of chopped mixed nuts
- Thrown in some dried cranberries or cherries for nutrient & color boost!
