One mug, 3 minutes, a handful of pantry store ingredients and what have you got? A beautifully easy, quick, simple chocolate mug cake. For last minute desserts and ‘got a chocolate craving’ snacks, this microwaved cake’s hard to beat!
Simple Chocolate Mug Cake
This microwave mug cake is one of those marvels that once you known how to make it, it’s a no brainer dessert, snack, sweet treat all rolled into one.
And no, of course you don’t want the kids to be eating these for breakfast, lunch and dinner no matter how tempting that might be, but as a once in a while treat, it hits the spot!
I use unsweetened cocoa powder to get the rich decadent chocolate flavor in this refined sugar free mug cake. The rest of the ingredients are pretty standard cake batter ingredients, except of course I don’t use refined sugars and use a little maple syrup instead, you can also use honey if you prefer to.
You don’t need to be using the oven to get a scrummy chocolate treat and with no bowl to wash up, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, this is for you!
Eggs, flour, oil, baking powder, cocoa, maple syrup and a touch of milk with a bit if a stir turn into a yummy sweet texture chocolate cake. In it happens in about 2 minutes. Yep, try one of these tonight. You’re welcome :)

Mug Cake Cooking Tips
Mug cakes are great, they’re even better when they don’t stick to the mug, have a fluffy moist texture and taste amazing.
Here’s some tips to help you to get your mug cakes coming out of the microwave perfect every single time:
- Butter your mug – it’s a step that takes 10 seconds and makes this 100 times easier when it comes to not only getting every bit of mug cake off the mug and into your mouth but also when it comes to washing up. I add a tiny bit of butter to the mug and microwave it for 10/15 seconds to melt it. Then I use a pastry brush to grease the whole of the inside of the mug.
- Use a microwavable mug – If you have a mug that’s specifically microwavable it’s a good idea to use it. I tend to use any old mug I can find that’s big enough and sometimes the mugs get really really hot. You then have to wait for it to reach room temperature and when you have the craving for this, waiting it out is not high on the agenda!
- Use a mini whisk – While these can seem a little gimmicky when you se them in the shops, if not adorably cute, they’re actually really good for mug cakes. As there is no separating of the wet ingredients and dry ingredients, a mini whisk means you can whip up everything to get a really smooth cake batter without the need for a bowl. And that’s good news!
How To Eat A Mug Cake
I mean, apart from with a spoon!
So sometimes we like a good old fashioned chocolate cake. The flavor’s rich and the textures soft and springy, it doesn’t always need anything else.
However, that said, if you want to add in something extra, you could try:
- A scoop of vanilla ice cream
- Caramel sauce need I say more?
- Peanut butter – I gently heat this up in the microwave so it’s runny, it only needs 15-20 seconds, try not to over heat it or it starts to become crumbly and very dry. Once it’s slightly heated you can then use it like you would a sauce.
- Sprinkles – Throw on a few sprinkles to turn this into a celebration. Like, just a few :)
