Broccoli’s pretty kid friendly anyway but have you tried sticky broccoli? This super simple sticky broccoli takes a few minutes to put together after you’ve boiled or steamed your broccoli and turns it from fine to fabulous!
Sticky Broccoli
Broccoli isn one of those vegetables that many kids eat without much fuss.
Even my fussiest, pickiest eater will eat broccoli. But…boiled (or steamed) broccoli can be dull, and this asian style sticky broccoli takes so little time to put together and turns this yummy veggie into something so special that i’ve found on more than one occasion the kids dipping into the pan to find leftovers. Yep, it’s that good!
I used to cook vegetables by boiling them, often for far too long and adding them onto the side of a dinner as though they were an after thought.
To be honest with you, they were an after thought.
We all know our kids need to eat vegetables don’t we. We know they’re good for them and that they’re supposed to make up a big part of our diets.
But..I had a problem.
My kids treated the veggies I gave them with a kind of distain and most of the time it was really hard work getting them to eat them. I’d threaten no pudding, no TV or no something else and for the most part the kids would begrudgingly eat them, but they didn’t really enjoy them. That’s changed now.
As it turns out you don’t have to boil vegetables until they’re soggy and horrible. Who knew :)
I like to turn veggies into something these days, whether it’s with sauces, the way I’ve cooked something or what I’ve served them with.
And you know what? The kids eat them without a fuss. Like no fuss at all. I know..it’s a mini miracle!
You can either steam or boil your broccoli for this recipe. Either way the broccoli doesn’t need to be cooked until it’s death and it’s nicer if there’s a little crunch. But whatever way you choose to cook the broccoli, it needs to be cooked before you make this recipe.
Asian Style Sauce
The sauce I make for this sticky broccoli is an Asian style one. I use ginger and Soy sauce mixed with maple syrup to give this an Asian feel with added stickiness :)
You can make this sauce ahead of time and keep it in the fridge if you want to, but I use the same pan as the broccoli’s been cooked in to finish it off with the sauce and it takes less than a minute to add it in.

Storing This Sauce
I guess you could keep a little jar of this sauce in the fridge ready to be poured onto the veggies if you’re using this often, so you only have to measure it out once and then use it a few times.
If you do this, I’d recommend keeping it in an airtight jar and give it a good shake to stir the ginger up before pouring!

There’s not too much to say about this sauce, it’s that simple!
- Once you’ve drained your broccoli after it’s cooked, put it back in the same pan you boiled it in and allow any excess water to boil away before adding your sauce
- Let the sauce bubble away in the broccoli until it’s reduced by about half
- You can use fresh ginger pushed through a garlic press to turn it into a paste if you don’t want ginger ‘bits’ in it!
- You can also use ginger paste
- Once you’ve added the sauce ingredients make sure to toss the broccoli around the pan well so it’s all well coated in the sauce
