The Thing about Sugar
If you allow it, it’s easy to find a valid excuse to reach for that sweet treat a little too often. Birthdays, Easter, Christmas and now Halloween. Committing to a healthier lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to feel deprived all the time, but it does mean you have to be honest with yourself about what you’re eating.
Sugar is a ‘sometimes food’ and overindulging in the sweet stuff is not going to help you or your family reach your health goals, regardless of the ‘special’ occasion.
If you follow my blog, you will see that our family didn’t do the ‘quit sugar thing’ (you can read more about that here). But we definitely see sugar as a treat rather than an everyday food. So when it comes to Halloween Candy, we all know that most of them contain bucket loads of sugar.
And we all know by now that sugar is not good for us. And just because there’s a bowl of candy in front of you – it doesn’t make it OK to eat the whole lot.
But it’s not a big deal if we have a bit. Which brings us to the next big question …..
How Much Candy Should you let your Kids Eat on Halloween?
Hmmm. Now this most definitely depends on you. If you are not OK with them eating a whole bowl of candy, then simply don’t let them. If your kids go trick or treating and arrive home with enough candy to feed a small village, then before you take their prized stash away, make sure you have a game plan. You could:
- Let them use candy pieces as currency for something else they want – i.e. 10 candy pieces = 1 hour screen time or
- Re-gift the Candy and use it to make up Halloween treats for their class mates
- Let them know ahead of time that no matter how much candy they gather, they get to pick X (you choose the number) amount and the rest gets tossed, donated or stored away.
Happy Halloween!!
