There used to be a powdered chocolate milk we’d have as kids that I loved. We were allowed it all the time, you’d just throw a spoonful of it into a glass, add milk and drink it. And it was delicious.
When I had kids I came across pretty much the same thing in the supermarkets. And I bought it, and of course the kids loved it as much as I used to.
BUT……when we started eating Clean and I was reading ingredients I discovered (a surprise to…perhaps no one!) it was absolutely stuffed with chemical ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce let alone knew what they were. So it had to go, but I needed a chocolate flavour milk replacement. Fast!
While I have nothing against a little unrefined sugar now and again, I’d really rather it wasn’t refined and I definitely don’t want the kiddos slurping down goodness knows what with their breakfast! And so I came up with this strawberry chocolate milk, which is a far healthier version of the ‘old’ milk they loved and I promise you, they love this just as much!
Ingredients
Using one heaped tablespoon of cocoa to make chocolate milk seems like a no brainer these days but before I really took stock and start reading labels, it’s surprising how little I thought about these things.
Cocoa makes the most chocolaty of chocolate milk, the strawberries and a lovely fresh flavor twist and a touch of maple syrup boosts the natural sweetness.
You can use honey if you prefer instead of male syrup. Both boost the yum factor!
This drink is far thinner than a smoothie or shake. It’s pretty much the same consistency as regular milk and you can use whatever milk you like, whether that’s dairy or plant based milk.

I use whole milk as it makes the drink creamier, but feel free to use whatever you like, the results will be the same! Almond milk works well, as does Oat milk, but I’ve found coconut milk changes the flavor too much.
Being full of berries this drinks high in vitamin nutrients and calcium nutrition from the milk, and using unsweetened cocoa powder keeps it low sugar. With a simple ingredient list, I urge you, try this drink!
I use my trusty Nutribullet to blend drinks. It’s powerful and blends ice cubes like a dream. If you don’t have one, think about getting one when you can. Cleaning the blender seems like an absolute chore compared to cleaning the Nutribullet!
This recipe makes enough for 2 big kids or 4 little uns’.

When I’m making drinks for the kids I like to use frozen fruit. It makes the drinks cold, and my kids prefer cold drinks.
If you’re using frozen strawberries you can skip adding the ice, if you’re using fresh strawberries then adding half a cup of ice cubes to your blender will cool the drink down.
Strawberry Hot Chocolate
Cold morning? Temperature dropped before bedtime? Try blending this and then gently heating it up on the stove, minus the ice of course, and giving it a stir as you do so. Or leave the strawberries out for an easy healthier hot chocolate.
