Chocolate biscuits are a tasty treat. This recipe shows how to make healthy chocolate biscuits using a few simple ingredients. Anyone can make these at home with a little help from the kids!
Healthy Chocolate Biscuits
If you’re looking for a healthier homemade biscuit that’s chocolate flavor, free from refined sugar and dead simple to make, you’re in the right place!
Is there really such a thing as healthy cookies? Well I guess that depends on what you’d be having instead. Biscuits and cookies are treats and so like lots of snack foods, they’re not full of nutritious goodness. But that’s not always the point, right?
These are snacks, not meals and so if like us your alternative ‘old’ way of eating snacks would be store bought biscuits then the answers most definitely YES! These are way healthier than nearly all the biscuits you’ll find in the supermarket.
We seem to interchange between calling these healthy chocolate cookies or simply biscuits, in our house they’re pretty much the same thing. Calling the dough ‘cookie dough’ seems to get the kids more interested for some reason :) I guess if anything these are more crumbly texture with less of the chewiness than other cookies I’ve made. Either way, these are a hit and generally don’t last the day!
I’ve made these chocolate biscuits with maple syrup as the sweetener instead of the refined sugars you might usually find in biscuits, and the chocolaty flavor comes from a good quality cocoa powder.
There’s only 5 ingredients and you’ve most probably got those in your pantry already, so this recipe makes a great rainy day spur of the moment thing to do in the afternoon if you want to bake cookies. And you can then snuggle up with a movie and eat them. Guilt free!

What’s The Difference Between A Biscuit & A Cookie?
I said biscuits and cookies were an interchangeable term in our house and it is, we all know what someone means whichever they say. But what’s the actual difference? Cookies are generally bigger and softer and very often have ‘things’ in them: dark chocolate chips, any chocolate chips (!) dried fruit or something added that makes them more of a sort of dessert than biscuits.
The word biscuit actually comes from the Latin word BisCoquere, which means baked twice. I guess this refers to the fact they’re drier and more crumbly, although I’ve never actually baked a biscuit twice! Does it matter especially? Not to my kids :)

To make these biscuits perfect:
- Use a large baking sheet and bake them in batches if you need to. Make sure they’re not touching and have a little room to expand
- Make sure not to skip the chilling the dough in the fridge part! Skipping this part means the dough hits the hot oven too warm and the biscuits will splurge and merge into one tray of biscuit. Which would taste good. And look horrible :)
- Line your baking sheet with parchment paper so they don’t stick to the pan when they go into the oven
- Have some extra flour on hand to flour your work surface before you roll out the dough and also flour the rolling pin so the dough doesn’t stick to it
- Use a large bowl to bring the dough together. It’s so annoying when you use a too small bowl and get ingredients everywhere and can’t mix it really well!
- I used a basic round 2½ inch cookie cutter to but out these biscuits. You can use any shape you like, they expand slightly when you’re baking them but they generally keep their shape well so if you have some fancy cookie cutters the kids prefer to use, they’ll be fine with this recipe!
* I did try making a batch of these cookies with coconut oil and while the basic recipe worked okay, the coconut flavor took away from the chocolate taste so real butter is the way to go with these!
If you want to you can add:
- Vanilla extract – For a little added vanilla flavor add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (or paste) to your beaten egg before adding to the dough
- Peanut butter – Try halving the butter quantity and adding it back in with peanut butter for a subtle pea-nutty taste
Storing These Biscuits
These biscuits will stay fresh for up to 2 days if you store them in an airtight container or biscuit tin in the cupboard.
I haven’t had enough of these left to have tried putting them in the freezer and usually prefer baking to be fresh.
