This creamy tropical fruit smoothie makes an ideal breakfast when the morning’s arrived too soon and you need to give the kids something healthy before they run out the door. I use Greek yogurt in this smoothie, it adds a creamy texture you don’t get with a pure fruit smoothie, and besides, the kids thought it was milkshake when they were a little smaller. And who am I to say different….. -:)
Tropical Fruit Smoothie Recipe With Yogurt
Greek yogurt (full fat here!) is a great source of calcium, so adding it into a smoothie gives the kids a double whammy of goodness to start their day.
And seriously, this smoothie, like most of them, takes minutes to whizz up. I use this blender to make all our smoothies, it’s so easy to clean: I’m a total convert!
Using Frozen Fruit For Your Smoothie
I often use frozen fruit for smoothies, for two reasons.
Firstly, I find the flavour better if they’re not diluted with ice cubes (and our smoothies have to be cold!) and so the frozen fruit takes away the need for ice, and second, frozen fruit is cheaper than fresh and just sits in your freezer until you need it, not going off. I’m a big frozen fruit fan.
Sometimes I buy bags of ready chopped fruit (many stores sell frozen fruit bags) and sometime I put fruit we’ve not eaten in Ziploc bags and stick it in the freezer, chopped up small first! Either way, having some frozen fruit in your freezer can save you from many mornings of the kids not having time to get something inside them before the school bus arrives.
What kind of yogurt do you use in smoothies?
I use full fat natural Greek yogurt in these smoothies. Greek yogurt has less sugar, because much of the lactose is drained out as it’s being made, and is high in not only calcium but protein too.
Greek yogurt is also packed with probiotics, the healthy bacteria that can help boost your immune system. So teamed with the fruit in this recipe, you’re setting the kids up for an energy filled start to the day.
Are fruit and yogurt smoothies healthy?
Yes. However, that said, moderation is the key to so many diet related issues, and kids smoothies are no different. Fruit is full of sugar, and so natural sugar or not, it’s something I keep an eye on to make sure we don’t have too much.
Sometimes I try and add a few extra veggies to smoothies if I think the kids won’t notice them, and this way I’ve been able to get spinach and beetroot, amongst others, into the kids diets. For this recipe though, I’ve left the spinach out :-)
