My quick and easy healthy cocoa pops recipe remake takes around three minutes to make, tastes almost exactly the same as the big brand but with only 4 whole food ingredients and a smidgen of unrefined sugar.
Healthy Cocoa Pops
Do your kids love Cocoa Pops? Mine too!
The problem is that the ultra yummy, chocolate flavored, sugar laden breakfast cereal is more candy treat than nourishing school morning breakfast. So it’s something I just don’t buy anymore. But guess what – my kids don’t miss out!
I’m a big believer in moderation and the only way a clean eating lifestyle works for our family is by not being too rigid in our eating plan.
We focus on eating a wide variety of whole foods without eliminating food groups as a whole (there are a couple exceptions where dietary issues need to be takesn into account, for example: my daughter struggles to process dairy). You can read more on our Clean Eating Rules (and get a handy free printable) here.
If you’ve had a little browse around the CEWK website, you may have noticed that our family didn’t quit sugar (you can read all about it here).
But, having said that {there’s always something isn’t there?} I do believe that sugar should be treated with caution. Don’t go overboard just because it’s a ‘natural or refined sugar’. Sugar is sugar. But to make this Clean eating thing doable, sometimes, we live a little :)
Homemade Cocoa Pops
You can make these Clean Eating Cocoa Pops in a few minutes from scratch, in your own kitchen using a few (4 to be exact) whole food ingredients which you most probably already have in your kitchen.
The best thing about this recipe is that it’s easy.
The second best thing is that it’s fast.
Homemade cocoa pops are really just a Cleaned up version of the breakfast cereal we all know. I couldn’t tell you how they’re made in the factory, but the resulting puffed wheat is chocolaty and turns the milk to chocolate milk, and so do mine. If these came out of a box no one would know they were homemade, and they really are so simple to make and the kids are guaranteed to love them!
Storing Homemade Cocoa Pops
These homemade chocolate puffed wheat delights can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. I use a cereal container like these, and I tend to make enough for at least a couple of breakfasts and once they’re made, they’re as easy as pouring the real thing into a bowl and eating.
You don’t need to keep them in the fridge, as long as they’re airtight, you can keep them in the pantry like you would any other cereal.
