Since oatmeal became my go-to breakfast during the week, it’s become apparent that the possibilities of flavor combinations are endless. With good old fashioned creamy oats as a base, so many flavor combinations just work! This Pear oatmeal recipe came about from a glut of pears I had from the garden. It’s a warming, sweetened lightly thorough ripe pears and will keep you going until lunch.

Pear Oatmeal
We have a Pear tree in our garden that gives us more pears every year than we know what to do with. Before we started eating Clean, we’d sometimes eat these pears as they became ripe and were generally a bit blasé about them. Now I see them for what they are: A free source of goodness for so many things. Yes, they still get eaten as they are, all sweet and juicy but they’re also the star ingredient for quite a few recipes I make.
I grate the pears for this recipe. I started off dicing them really small, but it was time consuming and some of the kids complained about the ‘chunks’. And while I’m not usually one to pander to the kids food-wise, I had to agree a little. So now I grate them and it works better. I do still add a few caramelized pear slices on top of the oatmeal, just because they’re both delicious, and look quite pretty.
Lightly Spiced Pears
I add cinnamon to this oatmeal and it complements the pears beautifully. I’ve also used the same quantity of mixed spice if I’ve run out of cinnamon, either’s lovely and add a warmness to the oatmeal, so use whichever you prefer.
Where I often sweeten the oatmeal while it’s cooking in the pan, for this recipe I caramelise the pears lightly in a pan while the oatmeals thickening. This is a really easy process, I peel a pear, core it and slice it thinly and then pan fry it in very little butter and maple syrup. You end up with very tender, rich and sweet pieces of pear. Scrummy :)

The Pear trees in our garden are Conference pear trees. They produce firm pears that take a while to ripen up, and they work brilliantly in this recipe. You need the pears to be ripe but still firm when you’re grating them or else they’ll become mushy and you won’t get the crispness.
A firmer pear also pan fries better than an over ripe pear. While very soft pears work well in other recipes, this isn’t the time to use them. Any variety of pear will work well in this recipe, so you’re looking for ripe but firm.
Dairy Free Pear Oatmeal
Make this dairy free by swapping out the dairy milk for any diary free alternative you like. Some dairy free milks are creamier than others, Oat milk is very creamy, coconut milk not so much. You’ll also need to swap out the butter in the pan frying part. I’d recommend not using an alternative here and pan fry the pears very gently adding the maple syrup right at the last minute, as long as you’ve got a really good non stick frying pan.
