This blueberries and cream oatmeal recipe is the stuff of dreams! In fact, I’m pretty sure my Mom used to make a version of this, maybe (probably!) out of a packet but when I made this for the first time, those childhood memories came flooding back and I knew I’d had it before. So. While heavy cream isn’t a regular breakfast ingredient (at least not in half cup quantities) this is so scrumptious, let’s just see past that and focus on the oatmeal :)

Blueberries And Cream Oatmeal
Blueberry fan? Check. Oatmeal fan? Hell yes. Partial to a little heavy cream now and again? Yep. Good, you’re gonna love this creamy, treat like blueberries and cream oatmeal.
I’ll tell you now, this is not like the little packet oatmeal things you get that last forever and a day in the back of the cupboard. It’s way better.
Seriously, you cannot get the same flavor in a packet as you can on the stove top using fresh ingredients, it’s just not possible. And that fresh cream just takes this oatmeal to another level. If you served this for dessert you’d get no strange looks, it’s that good.
One thing, and it’s important!! You need to toast the oats before you start this recipe. This stops the cream from making the oats mushy so make sure you don’t miss this step. I know it’s an extra nit of work on mornings where there’s already not enough time, but trust me, it’s literally 2 minutes and the result is something spectacular. Your day’s gonna get better right after these are ready :)
The Best Blueberries For Oatmeal
If I’ve got them, I like to use fresh blueberries for the main oatmeal and frozen for the garnish. Why? Well, it’s purely visual. Frozen blueberries have more water content, which while is absolutely fine, will turn the oatmeal blue. I prefer my oatmeal to be generally oatmeal colored (unless it’s cinnamon colored, also okay with me:).
Using frozen blueberries in the garnish sauce works because you want the deep blueberry color of frozen blueberries.
On top of the creamy oatmeal, they look beautiful. Having told you all that, using frozen blueberries in the main oatmeal will do nothing to dampen the delicious flavor of this oatmeal recipe, so feel free to use them. Just know your oatmeal will be blue.
I mean to be honest, I’m sure little kids would be thrilled to be given a bowl of blue breakfast :)
